D0431 (adjunct cancer screening device)
D0431 is a visual cancer detection screening test, not to be confused with a biopsy, which is a different code (possibly D7288 brush biopsy which harvests transepithelial cells). If the visual oral cancer examination reveals mucosal abnormalities, the dentist may consider the biopsy or a referral to an oral surgeon for further evaluation.
This service is often introduced through the hygiene visit. The Hygienist may perform a preliminary screening, however, to report the service for payment, the dentist must also evaluate and provide a final determination of the presented condition and diagnosis. Clinical notes in a narrative form detailing the visit are necessary if payment for services is expected.
